Cabinets 101

When remodeling your kitchen, one of the easiest and most dramatic changes you can make is by updating your kitchen cabinetry.  Prior to choosing which style and color of online kitchen cabinets, you will want to do a little planning and research to ensure that you get the exact kitchen of your dreams.

It is a good idea to start by researching the products and pricing that are available.  Look through the options in paint, counter tops, and cabinetry while keeping your budget in mind.  The purpose here is not to actually pick your products, but to plan out how everything will look when assembled and focus you in on what options you like best.

A great way to fully visualize the final product is to use our Free Design Service.  This will let you get a picture of your ideas in your specific kitchen measurements before you even begin.  Once you have this picture in your mind of what you are looking for, you can then begin to research the individual parts of your remodel.

In order to make the best cabinetry decision for your kitchen remodel, it is important to have a full understanding of kitchen cabinets.

Now that you have decided what you are looking for in you cabinet needs, the next step is to look at the various lines of cabinetry available to you.  Choosing a cabinet line will allow you to narrow your selections based on the options you need available in your kitchen.

Each line will offer different customization and upgrade options, not to mention colors, sizes, and design options.  Do you need narrow doors?  Or adjustable shelving levels?  Some lines may offer them while others do not.

The cabinet doors and drawers are probably your initial priority because these are the parts of the cabinets that are most easily seen.

When choosing cabinet doors there will be a vast selection of styles, colors, and finishes to choose from and it can be overwhelming.  It is important to check on the quality of the product more than just style alone.  Kitchen cabinets are a feature that could stay in your home for decades, so think of them as an investment.

Solid wood doors and drawers are going to provide the highest quality and durability, but there are other options that will provide you with high quality medium-density fiberboard (MDF) that will allow you to have long-lasting, quality kitchen cabinets at a price that best fits your needs.  We carry both solid wood and MDF cabinets.

The finish on the cabinets not only impacts the overall look and physical feel of the cabinets, but it can also increase the longevity of the cabinets.  A high-quality finish will have a strong cure and allow the cabinets to be cleaned easily while preventing discoloration and staining.

When selecting drawers, the whole drawer needs to be taken into account, not just the exterior facing.  Because they will be opened, you want to ensure that the inside is finished as well.  Further, the corners should be joined with interlocking dovetail joints as this is not only more attractive, but it is also stronger than other joining styles.

Be sure to check the quality of the drawers in the system you choose.  Your drawer packages should include the glides on which the drawers will roll.  There are several types of glides available.  Some will be spring loaded, meaning they will automatically close when released; others will be fully extendable, meaning you will have full access to the entire drawer.  Whatever mechanism you choose it is important to ensure that it glides smoothly and has a way of stopping automatically or it will fall out.

The box of your cabinets will be the storage section.  The highest quality boxes are made from strong and durable plywood.  All of the cabinets we sell are made from plywood that is strong enough to support everything you need it to and to last the life of your kitchen.

The box can be held together by something as simple as the traditional wood glue and staples, or the more complex and stronger joints with dados and rabbets.  Be sure to ask about the joints when selecting your cabinets.

Any exposed surface should be stained to match the doors as closely as possible or covered with a wood veneer to match the doors.

The interior of the cabinets should be covered with a wood veneer or melamine resin so that they are easy to clean.  It is also important to check if the shelves are adjustable.  This is not a feature of all cabinets, so if that is something you feel you need, be sure to check that it is an option on the box of the cabinets you choose.  Also, check to ensure the box is fully enclosed.  Not all cabinet lines have enclosed bottoms or backs.  Depending on the layout of your kitchen, you may need this to protect the interior of your cabinets from bugs and rodents.

There is a lot of information to consider when you choose to buy kitchen cabinets online.  You may wish to consider working with a contractor or designer to assist in addressing your questions and making your needs fit with your budget.
